Solid timber house - ecological solid timber house from Holzius

The Holzius solid timber house concept stands for an ecological solid timber house that combines sustainability and modern architecture. With the innovative plug-in construction method using solid timber elements without glue or metal, Holzius focuses on a natural living atmosphere and a healthy indoor climate.

HOLZIUS solid wood houses made from glue- and metal-free solid wood elements

The HOLZIUS solid wood houses from the Vinschgau Valley in South Tyrol offer living spaces in a natural construction method with their glue- and metal-free solid wood elements for walls, ceilings and roofs. A good 50 employees have been working on the realization of these sustainable houses made from renewable raw materials for 18 years.

Wall elements can reach a thickness of 12 to 36 cm

At the exhibition stand, we can demonstrate the construction method using an upright wall element. The wall elements always consist of vertical wooden planks, as this means that there is no settlement. The planks are always connected to each other with a tongue and groove joint, the individual layers with a ridge strip. All elements are of course free of glue and metal. Walls from 12 to 36 cm thick are possible, which corresponds to 2 to 6 layers. The connection is purely mechanical as well as due to the different wood moisture content of the individual elements. The surface layers can be replaced by other types of wood on request, mainly in the visible area. On the outside, the wooden layers are often insulated, at least in Germany.

Wall elements consist of planks and ridge strips connected in series

In a Holzius wall element, the individual planks are connected in series, so to speak, and the space for the wedge-shaped ridge strip is milled into the back, which is inserted into the resulting space and connects due to the different wood moisture content. The ridge strip, for example, is drier than the wooden plank and swells again when installed, pressing itself into the individual joints.

Different wood moisture secrets for the final strength

The connection of groove and comb can also be seen in the ceiling and roof elements, where 10 to 11 cross-section beams are connected in series. When pressed together, the individual elements are then joined with thick wood screws that work their way through the thread milled into the wood. The principle works in exactly the same way as with the wall elements: The dry hardwood screw meets the moister wood of the cross-section beams, swells and in this way ensures the final strength. The different wood moisture contents are the trick!

HOLZIUS has certification cradle to cradle in gold

HOLZIUS is also feeling the growing awareness of sustainability among the population. The absolutely natural construction method is very well received by an environmentally conscious clientele. Holzius' ecological solid timber construction stands for sustainability. In 2022, the company received the international cradle to cradle certification in gold, which stands for raw materials and products that can be fully reused to maintain or even increase their value. To date, no other solid wood system has received this award.
