The world-famous Porsche Design brand has also been a watch manufacturer since 1972. The watch division was established under the aegis of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, who created the famous Porsche 911 in 1963 and took up the subject of quartz watches almost 10 years later. Today, Porsche Design Luxusuhren is a wholly-owned subsidiary of the automobile company and is involved in the manufacture and sale of luxury watches, with the main target group being sports car customers. The main sales channels are the Porsche dealer organizations and luxury watch retailers. The most important markets currently on the agenda are Germany, Austria and the USA. For this reason, Porsche Design Luxusuhren is also taking part in Inhorgenta 2024.
Inhorgenta, which has just come to an end, provided Porsche Design Luxury Watches with a very successful business weekend right from the start. On Saturday evening, this was accompanied by the presentation of an award for the new edition of the legendary military chronograph from the 1970s and 1980s, which was used by various armed forces at the time, primarily to equip officers in the air and naval forces. This chronograph has been reissued and adapted with all of today's technical features such as new materials and modern functional technology. The public and expert jury were so impressed that Porsche Design won the "Watch Design of the Year" award.
In addition to the history and functionality of the watch, it has a highly innovative titanium carbide content, the material has all the properties of titanium such as anti-allergic properties, is over 50% lighter than stainless steel and is absolutely scratch-resistant, meaning it can only be worked on and damaged with a diamond. All in all, an extremely durable and robust watch that embodies the value retention that is an essential feature of these watches. Due to the complex production process, which allows for a maximum production of 10 to 15 pieces per month, it is only produced in a limited edition of 250 pieces worldwide at a cost of just under 11,000 euros each. All the watches, which take two years to produce, have already found a buyer. The sparkling trophy for the award for this innovative new edition adorned the company's trade fair stand in a display case after the award ceremony.
Porsche Design's central model is the watch for the sports car. The company offers its customers the opportunity to produce a customized watch to match their sports car. In practice, this means that the customer selects the key features of their sports car, such as the color and material of the exterior and interior, the quality of the yarns and leather, and even the choice of winding rotor and the design of their personal wheel. In a specially created watch configurator, the customer can put together his watch based on the model of his vehicle, can choose from the strap variants, determine the case color, length and color of the hands and in the end receive the maximum matching watch for his vehicle. The individually selected components from the configuration list are transferred electronically to Switzerland for production, where the watch is manufactured specifically according to these customer specifications.
A colleague from Switzerland will be demonstrating how this works at the trade fair stand. He will give trade visitors an insight into the meticulousness and technical expertise that goes into the implementation of the sequence mode, as well as how the individual components are constructed, the assembly process and the subsequent quality process until the finished watch is produced. In order to track down a counterfeit of such a precious Porsche Design watch, the movement must be taken apart. This is the only way to find out from small details whether it is an original or a fake, provided you are familiar with the manufacture of the watch. For the layman, however, this is extremely complicated. As Porsche Design is associated with the vehicles, the watches are also subject to very high standards in terms of quality and testing procedures. It starts with the fact that all watches are 100% rust-certified, and the tests also go beyond the usual watch standards. These special features make the difference to other luxury watches. The philosophy that Porsche applies to its vehicles is also applied to Porsche Design watches.
