The Middle Franconian artist and art therapist Sabine Weigand is presenting art on carbon at ARTMUC 2024. The idea for this very special, rarely seen painting on carbon sheets came to her during the corona pandemic when she was looking for a black background.
So she procured small carbon plates measuring approx. 10 x 6 cm and tested how paint adheres to this material. That worked at first. So she began to experiment, procured larger and larger carbon sheets and finally painted large-format cityscapes with a semi-abstract look on carbon. The deep black of carbon creates an impressive three-dimensionality and inevitably always leads to the impression of a photograph taken at night.
One of Sabine Weigand's paintings is called "Venice by night". It reveals her painting technique: She by no means paints over the carbon completely, but uses the blackness as an interesting contrast and works from this deep darkness towards light contrasts. She usually paints the finished works, which is why they are ideal for outdoor exhibitions - they are resistant to moisture, cold and heat.
In addition to city portraits, flowers are another of the artist's motifs. They appear surreal against the deep black background. The painting technique of the floral pictures originates from watercolor painting, which Sabine Weigand once began with. The filigree stems and flowers only slightly cover the large black surface of the carbon panel, whose structure stands out in this case and contributes to an additional artistic effect. Once again, the material supports the impression of three-dimensionality. At the same time, the flower images in particular create an impression of great lightness, which is of course the result of great technical skill.
Sabine Weigand's paintings are absolutely original. She has obtained patent protection from the German trademark and patent office for the application of paint on carbon: works using this impressive technique are unique to her.
