Vinzenz Schueller is an artist living in Vienna. Born in Vienna, he worked as an illustrator and commercial artist for over 20 years. A few years ago, he revived his original intention: Since then, he has been painting large-format pictures using traditional techniques with oil on canvas. From around 2019, he was able to make such a good living from this that he gave up working in the advertising industry.
He presents his paintings at exhibitions and trade fairs, and they are very popular. At ARTMUC 2024, he will be showing his latest works, some of whose oil is not even really dry yet. They reflect his typical view of things. Schueller is fascinated by everyday scenes, which often hold unexpected, magical moments. He captures these with a skillful technique. A man - painted from behind - walks past empty tables in a restaurant, his hands clasped behind his back, while a huge pane of glass gives a shadowy glimpse of the city outside. The light appears diffuse, while the floor and the tables reflect a band of clouds illuminated from below. The place is authentic. It is a Viennese hotel bar that Schueller himself likes to visit. The painter takes up very different motifs. These can be individual people and groups of people, architecture, mobility and much more. The picture with the man in the bar combines the impressive architecture of the hotel in question, according to Schueller, with the lonely man and the outside nature.
From a purely technical point of view, the artist follows a modern and now tried and tested approach: he paints from photo references, which gives the pictures authenticity. Creating purely from memory would be too imprecise, and it is often impossible to set up an easel in the places with the most exciting visual impressions. After all, a photograph also captures the light very precisely, which is almost the most important aspect for any painter. Further impulses for Schueller are forms, including, as mentioned, architecture, people in all their facets and, above all, in absorbed introspection, as well as the pull of our everyday life, which subtly but emphatically determines our paths.
The Schueller painting of a young woman standing at a high bar, again viewed from behind, but with a recognizable face of the head turned sideways, shows the artist's view of femininity. The woman, dressed in blue jeans and a T-shirt, casually holding a red trench coat, is as attractive as a woman with an accentuated figure and casually and gracefully bent legs can be. Incidentally, in this case it is a model, the painter has to make this effort. In this case, the art consists of "showing an everydayness" (Schueller's own words) despite the posed scene. In fact, like all of the artist's works, the picture lives from the fact that it gives the impression of a moment captured by chance.
Blue is a dominant color in the painter's pictures, while orange and a few shades of yellow and red provide skillful accents. According to the artist, he does not choose these colors consciously. However, he believes that blue is very useful as a contrasting color that allows the focus that is important to him. It works very well. In the picture with the woman at the bar (title: "Woman with red jacket"), the rather orange jacket, which we boldly identify as a trench coat, is a major eye-catcher alongside the dreamy woman. The prices for Vinzenz Schueller's paintings range from 1,500 to around 4,000 euros. The price depends primarily on the size.
