Winemaker Christian Eppelmann and his sister are the 5th generation to join the winery. They want to continue the family business, the work of their ancestors, and also break new ground with a slightly more modern style. They want to streamline and focus the "Rheinhessen general store" with its many grape varieties.
The Eppelmann winery focuses specifically on the Chardonnay, Riesling and Pinot Noir grape varieties from the base to the top. Anyone who knows the Eppelmann winery is aware of its passion for sparkling wines. The calcareous soils of the vineyards are perfect for this.
At ProWein 2024, Christian Eppelmann will be presenting the "Alte Reben" Chardonnay as well as single-vineyard Pinots as a highlight. Old vines are something that young winegrowers just starting out in the business cannot buy. It is the legacy of their ancestors, so the youngest generation is delighted to be able to make beautiful wines from the old vines with their excellent genetics.
The target group for Eppelmann wines is broadly defined. It is important to the young winemakers that the wines are fun to drink. The wines should be easy to drink, the basis for the alcohol content should be relatively low at 11 - 12% by volume and the wines should have a fresh, precise acidity and be fun as a soloist. The wines are aimed at all those who enjoy such wines; the primary focus is not on identifying a specific target group.
What sets the Eppelmann winery apart from other winegrowers is teamwork. Easy to say, but not so common in family businesses. Fortunately, Christian Eppelmann and his sister, as newcomers to the family business, can focus fully on the style and further development of the business. The parents manage the entire day-to-day business and keep the young people's backs free.
