With Smart Compact Pro, Hamm is presenting a technological solution that marks a decisive advance in asphalt compaction: For the first time, asphalt density can be measured and displayed directly during the rolling process - continuously, precisely and fully integrated into the work process. This solves a problem that for decades was considered incompatible with the requirements on the construction site: the lack of real-time control of compaction quality. Smart Compact Pro delivers the data where it is needed - in the rolling operation itself.
At the heart of the system is a soil radar mounted under the machine, the so-called Real-Time Density Scan. This sensor continuously measures the density of the paved asphalt during compaction - not retrospectively, not selectively, but live during the process. The roller driver receives the information directly on the display, can adjust the driving style and react immediately to deviations. In contrast to previous methods, in which vibrations were used to indicate stiffness, for example, the density itself is measured directly here. The basis for this is a precise radar technology that works robustly and practically under real construction site conditions.
Market-available devices such as the Troxler PQI NoNuke can be used for calibration. A correlation between sensor values and reference data is created via several comparative measurements. The entire process takes around ten minutes and can be easily integrated into the construction site workflow. This turns a sensor-based solution into a reliable instrument for quality control.
In addition to the real-time display, Smart Compact Pro also enables complete documentation of the measured values. In conjunction with the Track Assist WPT system, the density information is recorded, stored and visualized across the entire area. The results are so-called density maps - digital evidence of the actual compaction performance achieved. These maps can serve as proof to clients and provide reliable data on compliance with prescribed specifications, such as the degree of compaction or permissible void ratios. The entire data evaluation is carried out via the John Deere Operation Center, where the recorded information is automatically stored and can be retrieved at any time.
Smart Compact Pro is designed for precise real-time measurement during the pass - ideal for direct control and monitoring of compaction. In addition, Track Assist WPT provides a complete overview of the processed area. Both systems can be combined and complement each other functionally: while Smart Compact Pro supports operational decisions in real time, Track Assist WPT provides the basis for structured verification management at the end of the project. This provides a complete digital system that covers both construction site-related control and audit-proof quality documentation.
The first market launches will take place in North America, where machines with high frequency are specially designed for the usual working frequencies there. At the same time, test runs and demonstrations with various roller types will take place in Europe - including models from the HD+ series and the pivot-steered HX machines. The sales launch for Europe is scheduled for the beginning of next year. Both technologies - Smart Compact Pro and Track Assist WPT - will then be available for European markets. Hamm plans to offer both systems on a wide range of machines in order to meet the different requirements of different project types.
The feedback from the industry is clear: The system is technically convincing, easy to understand and meets a need that has long remained unfulfilled. For many specialist users, Smart Compact Pro is exactly the piece of the puzzle that was previously missing in quality assurance - precise, immediately available and integrated into existing digital infrastructures.
